The Springfield Symphony (SSO) will hold its final classical concert Dance Around, Around on Saturday, April 2nd at 7:30 p.m. Dance Around, Around features Strauss’s Voices of Spring Waltz followed by Tchaikovsky’s elegant Rococo Variations with 2019 Hellam Competition winner Bryan Cheng. Closing out the evening will be Mahler’s Symphony No. 1.The performance will be held at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts. At our final Classical Masterworks concert of the season, we bring Europe’s many dance traditions together. You will hear a traditional, elegant, and swirling Viennese Waltz by Johann Strauss, Jr., the “Waltz King.” “I love every concert we play, but there are some that give me a special thrill, and this is one of them,” stated Music Director and Conductor Kyle Wiley Pickett. You will also enjoy the stately and classical Rococo Variations with Hellam Competition Winner Bryan Cheng on the cello. Of Cheng’s appearance Pickett added, “We're so excited to finally welcome Bryan Cheng to the SSO performance. This has been a long time coming. For two years, his appearance with the SSO has been delayed, and in those two years, Bryan's career has taken off. We're so fortunate to be featuring this spectacularly talented cellist and winner of the 2019 Hellam Competition.” We conclude our concert with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, which includes foot-stomping dances and yodeling from one of Mahler’s early songs, Hans und Grete.
“Mahler's Symphony No. 1-TheTitan is one of the greatest symphonies ever written. It is a tour de force for the orchestra and an emotional roller coaster for the audience. It is beautiful, powerful, melodic, moving, and uplifting," said Pickett. "Dance around, around!" the song goes. "Let whoever is happy weave in and out! Let whoever has cares find his way home."
